  • i realize i haven't blogged in... hmm..... ages! as most of you know i have been pretty busy since january. every week has been chock full of 30ish hours of work, school full time, and attempting to finish up my flying. this past week in particular was a bit overloaded. it was a normal busy week except for a few things that added to the week (to put it mildly). for starters, last weekends events are going to be the bulk of this blog, mostly because it was the most dramatic. in short, my girls (dogs) decided they wanted to go for a walk, so CJ was kind enough to take them out... but on this wonderful walk on the rabbit creek trail they wanted to make friends with an unfriendly porcupine. we'll call him Bernard... Bernard felt a little intimidated by the girls because he thought they wanted to eat him. i'm sure he was simply over-reacting (sense the sarcasm ;). because of this awkwardly misinterpreted relationship between bernard and the girls they had a bit of an argument. but instead of sharing words, it was a one way transfer of hundreds of quills. by the end of it, and almost 2000 dollars later over 400 quills was pulled out of tsunami's face (over a hundred of those were inside of her mouth (evidently Bernard was correct in his assumption of being eaten), and one special quill made it through her right eye :(... Bri Bri had about 100 pulled out of her nose and was awfully cute during the whole process. here are some pictures to show y'all a bit about the fun filled evening.
to continue this crazy week... it was of course the week of midterms and i had my stage 2 check-ride at the end of week i had to prepare for. so the week was FULL of studying, preparing, babying, medicine administration, and other things.

  • SOLO X-COUNTRY!!!

so before i go on, i need to apologize for the lack of pictures (as they always seem to express a thousand words... words that i don't have at that)...

so today was a wonderfully productive day! and on top of the fact that i was able to complete my solo cross country, God really blessed me with how it happened...
i was scheduled for a 2:00pm flight in N439AF (the plane) and was thoroughly prepared to make the trip BY MYSELF!! woohoo! i had chosen this slot weeks ago because the planes get booked rather quickly, and there are a limited number of available planes. the night before the weather looked like it might be questionable as the day progressed (winds projected to be between 20-40 knots by afternoon). i told myself... "self, you are going to get up early tomorrow to check and see if there are any planes open up and become available earlier in the day to make the chances of my being able to fly tomorrow successful". planes rarely become available, but every so often someone cancels there flight at the last minute. i got up early this morning and saw that someone had cancelled their flight and one plane (453SP) became available from 10am-1pm... so i jumped on it, shoved a bowl of cereal in my mouth, finished my flight plan (current wind conditions, temp, etc. so that i could have the correct headings to airports i'd only been to once), checked my work and i was on my way as quickly as legally possible ;)... the weather was gorgeous and i was excited because finally some favor was coming my way for the second weekend in a row (concerning the weather), when the previous month had been nothing but bad flying weather. i pre-flighted the airplane, filed my flight plan, called dispatch, got fuel, and i was on my way... did i mention it was by myself? ;) it was a beautiful flight, however on my way back into Wasilla Airport i started getting quite a bit of turbulence... more than i had expected. the wind was going one direction at 3000 feet and the complete opposite direction once i got low enough to land at 500 ft. it was quite the learning experience once i figured out which runway would be most suitable for the current conditions... but all went as planned once i realized the wind situation. Wasilla airport was my last stop before flying back to EDF, so i continued on and the rest of the flight went relatively smooth. the blessing was that, almost as soon as i landed the wind began to rise to the projected 20-40 knots and if i had not gone early i would have had to cancel yet another flight (a common theme this winter). God was gracious to me and i completed the flight safely and having learned more through experience. i give props to my instructor for preparing me as well as he has. although i was put into a bit of an unexpected situation (alaska flying... what can i say), i knew exactly what to do and had no hesitation to execute the actions necessary. my training really has been amazing looking back at 2-3 months ago and now. my abilities and confidence have greatly improved thanks to Keith (my instructor) and some grace from the man upstairs.
oh, so the camera i thought was in my flight bag... wasn't... thus the reason for no pictures (that's probably better not having that as a distraction though i guess ;)

  • First X-Country Flight!!

As most of you know, i've been trying to accomplish a cross country flight with my instructor for quite some time now. so a month later, the planets aligned just right (as did my instructor's schedule and the stubborn weather ;) and i finally got to go out for my first cross country flight from Elmendorf (EDF), to Skwentna (SKW), to Petersville (a town of literally 4 small houses in the midst of mountains and wilderness) (the point of going here was to test my "tracking" abilities with only using instruments, the town was so small if you didn't get right over it you wouldn't see it. i definitely didn't see it my first pass, so we had to turn around and try again.) then to Talkeetna (TKA), to Willow (UUO) and then finally back to EDF.
it was an unbelievable flight. the weather was GORGEOUS, but crazy cold (for anchorage anyway). TKA was -23 F as UUO was not too much warmer. once we reached TKA we were able to shut down the plane, and eat lunch at this sweet restaurant called "latitude 67". once lunch was finished we jumped back in the plane and completed the flight after a "simulated engine failure" (my instructor has a sick love for pulling this on me when i least expect it). we finished our flight right at dusk, when the sun was beautifully placed behind the bright pink and orange horizon. God truly is an artist, because from up there it's hard to think of anything more beautiful (except my fiance... i had to stick that in there... ;) all in all, i was thankful for finally getting to complete this stepping stone on my way to getting my private. only a couple more weeks (weather permitting), and it should be done. i truly am blessed to be where i am and doing what i am fortunate enough to do here in alaska. this flight was great to see more of God's phenomenal creation, from one of the tallest mountains in the world (Denali), to flying over a huge bull moose... what a privilege that i would love to share when that day comes. so enjoy my trip with me, and sorry the pictures aren't very good, my focus was on a few more important matters ;)

the camera doesn't do this justice at all, it was a spectacular view... Denali is that peak rising above the clouds on the far right!

that's me.... not looking at the flight panel, or outside... ;)

the stop at Talkeetna airport! however this is not the plane i flew, this is the renown Beaver one day, i'd love to fly this puppy!

    P1130360
becoming dusk... again, spectacular views, as the camera is accidentally pointed at the panel (which kinda made a cool shot, thus the reason it made the cut to the blog)

  • New Year's this year was lots of fun. i got home on new year's eve around 3pm, went home, unpacked, and then headed out to the Shultz's place for a party! it was lots of fun seeing old friends that had come home for the holidays from college! good conversation, good games, good music, and as always... good fun (minus one... again)! at the end of the evening, the ball had dropped and 2008 was well in effect. hard to believe that it's a new year, yet again! this year has gone by both very slow and very fast and there is SOOOOO MUCH so reflect on this past year. an unbelievable amount of blessings, struggles, tests, life changes, and SO much more. 2007 has certainly been one of the most important, memorable, and grateful years of my life thus far. as it looks now, 2008 has an unbelievable amount to look forward to. God has been so gracious to me this past year and i pray that he will again as well as continuing his work within me as more change and life comes in 2008.

    Skijoring on New Years...
so there's a good story associated with this video:
as i decided to take some video, most of you that know me know that i stink at cross country skiing, aka, i fall alot! so i was proud when i had finished filming without falling, and then... as soon as the camera turned off, i crashed... hard... i kinda wish i had the video still going, cause that would have been pretty funny, i guess you'll just have to imagine what it looked like. those people i passed on the trail in the video saw it all... i think they were laughing at me, but that's nothing new ;)

  • Mickler Christmas (minus adrienne :(

oh Christmas! what a bitter-sweet time of year it has been this year... it has been so good to spend Christmas with family this year... especially since it was in doubt that i'd be able to go to see family this year. it was a special christmas this year. It was very different in so many ways, but made me realize yet again the goodness of God's grace in our lives. it cost a lot of money for everyone to get together this year, so gifts were limited... and it was so good! not much was said or expressed, but for me it was a very special time. it will be my last christmas with my family before i have one of my own and by God's grace i was able to come down to chicago and see everyone. yet again God provided and i know he will continue to in these next couple of months where money it tight. it was a little hard not having some of those closest to me oversees and unable to spend christmas with me... but i guess that's a bit selfish knowing that both my sister Adrienne and my fiance Rachel are right smack dab where God wants them right now! My prayers are with both of them right now that this christmas would be a really special one! i love you guys!
so here are a few pictures of the Mickler Christmas (minus one)... and a few pictures of the new dog.

so this is my mom's new dog, Cali (pronounced koly?)... she's quite the character. oh... and nobody is allowed to tell bri bri and tsunami that i have pictures of another dog on my blog ;)

    P1130250
she was mouthing off at me... so this is disciplinary action! she was speechless afterwards (i don't think she expected that ;) drastic times call for drastic measures.
